JTF raids criminals’ hideouts, sets MASSOB’s camp ablaze in Nnewi
In line with Governor Willie Obiano’s resolve to rid major cities in Anambra State of criminals and all forms of anti-social activities, a joint security operation team comprising the Army, Police, State Security Service (SSS), Navy and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday raided some criminal hideouts in Nnewi North Local Government Area and set the camp of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) ablaze. Some of the flashpoints raided include Mbize (an erosion site) which is said to be the den of men of the under world in Uruagu quarters, Oduda Nnewichi and Obiofia. Five suspects, including a woman, were also arrested at the erosion site.
At Oduda Nnewichi, the joint security operation team raided and set ablaze a camp belonging to MASSOB.
Some of the items recovered during the operation, according to a security source, include Biafran flags, attendance register, military uniforms, caps and items suspected to be charms. The team also arrested one suspect. At Obiofia, the team also recovered seven polythene bags containing Indian hemp and other items.
Reacting to the raid, MASSOB national deputy director of information, Mazi Chris Mocha described the situation as unfortunate, arguing that there was no reason or justification for the raid. Mocha said that the military uniforms allegedly recovered from the MASSOB camp were properties of the organization.
“It is very unfortunate that our camp was raided and there was no reason for that. Even though we support the effort of the task force to rid Onitsha of criminals, the exercise should not have been extended to us because we are not criminals.
“There is no reason for that raid. Those uniforms they said they recovered from us were not Nigerian Army or any of the forces’ uniforms. They are Biafran security uniforms.
They were neither arms nor ammunition. So nothing justifies that military action against us. We have committed no offense,” Mocha explained.
All effort to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka (DSP) to react on the incident proved abortive.
