APGA crisis: Obi disowns campaign against Jonathan
Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi
Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has denied being behind a media campaign accusing President Goodluck Jonathan of betraying him in his alleged bid to take control of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
Obi, in a statement on Wednesday by
his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Valentine
Obienyem, said the claim contained in the advertorial that Jonathan
“stabbed him in the back” for losing the APGA case at the Court of
Appeal, did not emanate from him or any of his associates.
The Court of Appeal had last week ruled that Obi’s political opponent, Chief Victor Umeh, was the National Chairman of APGA.
Describing the publication as another
plot by “enemies of progress to cause disaffection between friends,”
the governor said the sponsors of the advertorial had tried to give an
impression that the President directed the courts on what to do.
The statement read, “Our attention has
been drawn to an advertorial in some newspapers, alleging, among others,
that the President, Dr. Jonathan, stabbed our Governor, Mr. Obi, in
the back for allowing the Court of Appeal to enter judgment against him
in the APGA matter.
“For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to
disassociate the government of Anambra State from the publication,
which we believe was planted by enemies to cause disaffection among
friends.
“From the advertorial, it is easy to
assume that President Jonathan controls the judiciary and should be
villified for not allowing judgment to swing to a particular side. This
is farther from the truth as the judiciary remains an independent arm of
the government.
“Governor Obi did not take any person to
court over the APGA case and cannot be said to be desperate over the
judgment going either way.
“He is too busy in Anambra State,
executing his projects for the good of the state which everybody
acknowledges. He has said consistently that he does not have any issue
with anybody in APGA, including his brother and that APGA remains one
family.”
The statement also denied another
claim in the advertorial that Obi might join the Peoples Democratic
Party. It said the governor had used every occasion to state that he
would not vie for any post after 2014.
